Pyramids Win First-Ever Title After Victory Over Mamelodi

Pyramids FC defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 on Sunday night to win their first-ever CAF Champions League title.

Masandawana made only one change from the first leg, substituting Jayden Adams for Arthur Sales and Ramadan Sobhi as Pyramids’ only change.

Sundowns had a lot of the ball in the first half but survived a scare when Fiston Mayele side-footed a floated cross against the side-netting.

Mayele made amends halfway through the first half by jumping on a defensive black by Grant Kekana in the box and sending a strong first-time finish past Ronwen Williams.

Pyramids had total control at this point and came close to scoring a second goal through a header from Sobhi after a corner kick, but Williams saved Sundowns from defeat.

Lucas Ribeiro gave the Brazilians a great chance in stoppage time when he put Tashreeq Matthews through on goal, but the Brazilian was unable to beat goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy in the box.

Masandawana came back with a lot of energy after the restart and threatened to equalise when Teboho Mokoena’s long-range shot stung El Shen

Sundowns sought a way back, so they made an offensive replacement with Sales, Thapelo Morena, and Peter Shalulile.

But the Brazilians’ perseverance paid off when Rayners volleyed in the near corner after a loose ball, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) authorised the goal.

Three minutes from the end, Sundowns nearly equalised through a close-range shot from Shalulile, but El Shenawy made a good stop.

In the long stoppage time, Masandawana put up a fierce fight, but the Egyptian big-spenders held their own and won their first Champions League championship.
